For the occasion of the 40th Anniversary, the Media and Exhibits Committee of the SCIARC Alumni Council are launching a competition for the design, management, and construction of “40/40” an Exhibit of Alumni work. On Thursday, April 11th, 2013, one winning entry will occupy the lobby space of the Farmers and Merchants Bank located at 401 S Main St. in downtown Los Angeles, and will serve as “canvas” to depict Alumni work. The Exhibit will coincide with April’s Downtown Art Walk, giving SCIARC, Alumni and the Winner exposure to thousands of art aficionados.
The Exhibit will also be installed at SCI-Arc as the centerpiece of the “Alumni Lounge” during the 40th Anniversary Celebration Weekend of April 19-21, 2013.
“40/40”, referring to SCIARC’s original 40 students that formed the school and 40 years of its operation, aspires to honor the work of over 4000 alumni that has since passed through the school.
The Challenge
We envision fabricating a structure that will transform the space of the lobby/lounge and receive images of alumni work via digital projection. This competition asks for designs that will spatially transform the lobby space, be able to contain and/or receive digital projections of SCIARC alumni work received through previous calls for entries.
The winning entry will have these characteristics:
- Represents SCI-Arc spirit
- Aspires to spatially transform space of the lobby/lounge
- Will be inventive in its use of material and form
- Is conscientious of the materials used and their impact on the environment
- Is easy to produce and install
- Contains enough detail to ensure construct ability
The selected project will work closely with the Media and Exhibits committee and will be commissioned to produce, construct, install, and disassemble the final design.
