The objective of the sketch competition is to generate a conceptual design of a community housing and services development for homeless men, women and children that includes outdoor gathering and recreational spaces at 238-240 Allegheny Ave. in Philadelphia. The scheme should look to jump start the reuse of available vacant sites and provide a safe place for families and individuals in transition who need assistance and guidance to help re-enter neighborhood life.
This stretch of land is a formerly busy mixed-use part of the city called Fairhill and is in need of new investment. Located near city-owned playing fields and occupied residential streets, there is an opportunity to create a site-specific design that offers a universal concept for sites such as this one.
The mission of the competition is to provide maximum freedom to participants in proposing imaginative and sustainable building design ideas for a site that has tremendous potential to have a transformative effect at a critical neighborhood.
Aside from the top prize of the internship and a cash prize of $500, second prize is a $500 cash award and third prize is a $250 cash award. Selected entries will be posted on the BLTa website for 180 days.
The competition is open to students from the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington D.C. All entrants must be currently enrolled undergraduate university students, eligible to work in the United States and over the age of 18.
The competition brief and materials will be released September 27, 2013. Those who submit an online entry will receive a $10 credit to Starbucks through Facebook.
Registration is now open and will continue through September 26.
Entrants must submit their sketches via Facebook no later than October 11, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Project submission must be composed as one (1) image/board, presented in 40-inch by 40-inch format as a JPEG (maximum size of 10 MB) and no more than 200 words describing the entry.
Winners will be announced October 25, 2013.
The competition jury will be made up of BLTa Principals Michel L. Prifti FAIA; Eric M. Rahe AIA LEED AP; Michael R. Ytterberg PhD, AIA, LEED AP; and Principal Emeritus John Bower FAIA, University of Pennsylvania Professor Emeritus and University of Pennsylvania Design Review.
