Lexus invites emerging architects, designers, and creators around the world to participate in the 2017 Lexus Design Award, an international design competition that targets up-and-coming creators from around the world and seeks to foster the growth of ideas that contribute to society by supporting designers and creators whose works can help to shape a better future.
The Lexus Design Award provides a unique opportunity for four finalists to work with a globally recognized designer as a mentor to create prototypes of their designs, and then exhibit them at one of the design calendar's most important events: Milan Design Week (also known as Salone del Mobile).
- Twelve finalists will be invited to exhibit their works at a Lexus exhibition space during Milan Design Week in April 2017
- Four winners among the 12 finalists will receive mentorship and up to $30,000 of funding to cover prototype production costs. The four winners will create prototypes between January and March 2017, through sessions with their assigned mentors.
- Each of the twelve finalists will be asked to give a presentation at Milan Design Week 2017*, after which a single Grand Prix winner will be named from among the four prototypes through final review by the judges.
Judges and mentors include leading minds in the worlds of design and architecture, including Paola Antonelli (Curator, MoMA), Toyo Ito (Architect), Alice Rawsthorn (Design commentator, International New York Times), Aric Chen (Curator), and Snarkitecture (Designers and Architects).
Past winners and finalists have spanned technology, architecture, product design, and fashion design, including a project exploring how a marine algae byproduct can be used as an environmentally friendly packaging material alternative to plastic, a kinetic lighting sculpture that generates its own energy, a heater designed to simulate sunlight, and a signage system designed to realize smoother pedestrian crossings by playing on the subconscious tendency to obey arrow signs.
