Public Programming
Join us at 2426WW for Public Programming, a summer-long experimental film series with monthly screenings of some of the public domain's film, radio, and literary material - some reused, some reprogrammed.
Initiated by Noémie Despland-Lichtert (Roundhouse) and Brendan Shea (2426), Public Programming is dedicated to supporting work in the creative commons by contemporary architects and artists. The series aims to investigate changes in the commons of the urban and cultural sphere and facilitate public engagement with works of critical and creative archival research. One artist or architect will join the series for each screening, providing perspective, context, and historical material alongside recent work.
A Trip to the Moon
Our guest in August, UnitedFutures, forms and formats visuals to augment space, represent place, and imagine emotion. Virtual characters and virtual spaces echo optical illusions and fictional worlds, composed and composited via rendering, animation, and VR. Embarking on an acoustic journey, the instrumental ensemble Peaceful Retreat plays a half hour instrumental/post-rock set which serves as the soundtrack for scenes from the historical footage and UnitedFutures’ work with digital aesthetics.
During the event, special effects, widely used as devices of artifice in art and architecture throughout history, play tricks on perception in Georges Méliès, Le Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip to the Moon), a 1902 adventure-fantasy film based on a nearly homonymous novel from 1865.
A class of French astronomers, educated in the halls of the Astronomic Club and assisted in the field by a deck of sailor-femmes, draft plans and set in motion a lunar expedition aboard a capsule-shaped custom craft. Discovering mystery upon arrival, strange scenographic and atmospheric conditions ensue. As do copious edits. The film heavily relies heavily on jump cutsand stop motion to explore a wide range of illusionistic and temporal effects including vanishing, exploding, dissolving, dividing, and double-exposing.
