Nahyun Hwang and David Eugin Moon, principals of N H D M architecture +urbanism, in conversation with Sean Anderson, the Associate Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art, as a part of 2018 New Practice New York Award Winner's Lecture Series. New Practice New York Award, a biennial award since 2006, serves as the preeminent platform to recognize and promote innovative architecture and design firms in NYC. NPNY honors architects that utilize unique and innovative strategies, both in the projects they undertake and the practices they have established.
N H D M is a collaborative practice for design and research in architecture and urbanism led by its partners Nahyun Hwang and David Eugin Moon. The studio aspires to an expanded practice of architecture, and works between disciplinary borders at vastly varying scales, engaging diverse modes of practice from built design work to highly speculative projects and research. Each project uniquely investigating under-explored spatial concepts in the context of the cultural, political, and economic complexities of the contemporary built environment, the work aims to be analytic yet anticipatory.
Sean Anderson is Associate Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art. A Fellow of the American Academy in Rome and the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, he has degrees in architectural design and history from Cornell, an M. Arch from Princeton and a Ph.D in art history from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has practiced as an architect and taught in Afghanistan, Australia, India, Italy, Morocco, Sri Lanka and the U.A.E. His book, Modern Architecture and its Representation in Colonial Eritrea, was published in 2015 and was nominated for the AIFC Bridge Book Award for Non-Fiction. At MoMA, he has organized the exhibitions Insecurities: Tracing Displacement and Shelter (2016-17), Thinking Machines: Art and Design in the Computer Age, 1959-89 (2017-18) and manages the Young Architects Program (YAP) and Issues in Contemporary Architecture exhibition series.
