Top architects to bake and build their vision of a future city - entirely from gingerbread!
Architects and designers will bake and build their interpretation of a future city - all made from scrumptious gingerbread - for this year’s Museum of Architecture’s (MoA) third annual Gingerbread City exhibition at the V&A.
The Gingerbread City is an annual exhibition which invites architects, designers and engineers to celebrate the festive season by creating an entire city from gingerbread.
Between the 8 December 2018 and 6 January 2019 visitors can wander round an incredible (and edible) mini-city. Tickets are available online here.
To celebrate this year’s exhibition, families can have a go at building their own gingerbread houses at a series of workshops hosted by MoA. To pre-book visit here.
Based on a masterplan developed by Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design, participants have been invited to imagine a sustainable and inclusive city by responding to the theme ‘Imagining the Future City’, and to think about how people will work, live and play in cities over the next decades.
This year's Gingerbread City builds on from last year’s successful project, and includes a wide range of architecture practices participating in the showcase: Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, Stanton Williams, RCKa, Studio Egret West and many more – are amongst those who will design unconventional and elaborate buildings made entirely out of gingerbread.
Melissa Woolford, Founder and Director of the Museum of Architecture said: “We’re thrilled to be located at the V&A this year and hope that this will enable us to reach an even greater audience than before. I am excited to see how this year’s participants will interpret the brief to create a city that is forward-thinking, inclusive and sustainable, as well as tempting our tastebuds. Engaging with the general public, especially children and families, is our main goal and I’m sure the creations will delight and inspire in equal measure!”
Both the MoA and V&A have shared values on the promotion of contemporary design and are committed to engaging with the general public about the built environment. The Gingerbread City has always been located in the South Kensington museum district and this year it will be built inside the V&A Creative Studio, close to the museum’s Architecture gallery.
