The dream of escaping the demands of daily life is one inspired by common ailments—traffic jams, school uniforms, or inclement weather. Second Life searches for the particular places—real, imagined, and virtual–that exist somewhere outside of ordinary time and space, not only as a result of dreams but as a result of the natural phases of life. Through a selection of drawings, photographs, toys, and video games from the CCA collection, Second Life offers seven specific glimpses of getting away from it all. While respite is a common theme amongst them, the means for reaching it vary widely, from attending rock concerts at Cedric Price’s Phun City music festival site, and enjoying lakefront views from Shim-Sutcliffe’s Muskoka Boathouse, to building virtual neighbourhoods in SimCity 2000.
This exhibition is the result of a series of conversations between Giovanna Borasi, Megan Marin, and Keren Kuenberg.
