Hello Wood Project Village / SETTLING: THE RITUALS OF ARRIVAL / 14-22 July 2016
Hello Wood announces its team leaders for Project Village 2016
Students, young architects, designers and artists can apply to participate in the award-winning summer school and festival
Budapest-based Hello Wood organises its international design and architecture summer school and festival for the 7th time this year. The 8-day-long summer university continues its Project Village programme, where participants are asked to envision and build a new village model by joining the ongoing debate around the countryside, and then by actually building and testing the imagined built-forms. Building on last year’s success, this year’s theme for Project Village is SETTLING: THE RITUALS OF ARRIVAL, exploring the first architectural steps in the process of making ourselves feel at home and building a community. Team Leaders of Hello Wood 2016 consists of a unique mix of internationally renowned research based, experimental practices and academics, like German installation artist Markus Heinsdorff; Urban Think-Tank, an interdisciplinary design practice dedicated to high-level research and design on a variety of subjects, concerned with contemporary architecture and urbanism founded by Professor Alfredo Brillembourg of ETH Zurich; Kosmos Architects, bringing together 4 partners from Moscow, Basel and New York and collaborating with artists, photographers, designers and researchers besides architects; FORA, an award winning architectural collective currently based in Lisbon that explores the role of architecture as the ultimate tool for mediating social relations; researchers of Berlin University of Arts (UDK), and many independent architects and academics from 12 different countries. Hello Wood presents an open call for students to their week-long summer school in rural Hungary. In 2016, Project Village participants work together to establish the foundation of Hello Wood’s rural campus.
Open Call apply by 22 May 2016

Hello Wood started as an art camp in 2010 for students in architecture, art and design and has grown into an award winning, unique international summer school involving more than 20 universities and 30 countries. Hello Wood integrates various fields of art, design and science; builds community and encourages talent. All projects are shared, developed and built in a collaborative process. Projects are mostly constructed from wood and the results of a unique interplay of art, innovation and social commitment. It brings together architecture, art, innovation and social impact.
Last year participants of Hello Wood’s Project Village created a Rolling Pub, Village Cinema and Migrant House – to name but a few – and these were later transported to other locations, becoming a catalyst for events and social interaction. Now, participants are asked to construct a place of arrival, permanence and connection. Participants will explore the first architectural acts of settling, how people tend to make themselves at home, and what subtle cues and territorial definitions make the roles of host and guest change or interchange. Students are invited to help to invent and realise the collective idea of a village designed and inhabited by its architects. Participants will navigate the negotiations required to plan a village settlement from scratch, as well as engage in building themselves. Hello Wood is the unique combination of summer school and festival: during the day they build, design and debate during the night they reflect, lecture listen, discuss, party and connect. They test democratic work practices and challenge traditional student-teacher, client-designer synergies at work. Hello Wood encourages students - this year more than ever - to be part of the debate, join the discussion of Project Village not only within their teams but by offering the possibility of evening presentations and bringing projects and themes related to this year’s Project Village: the first architectural steps in Settling, Rituals of Arrival.
Project Village will take place 14-22 of July 2016 at Hello Wood’s recently acquired lush land at Csorompuszta (western Hungary), two hours from Budapest. To take part in this Architizer A+ Award-winning summer workshop, applications should be submitted by 22 May 2016. Each team consists of approximately 10 people and is provided with 3 cubic meters of wood to bring their imagined projects to life.
