Within the courtyard of the incredible Victoria & Albert museum, is the Elytra Filament Pavilion; a newly-commissioned pavilion for the V&A Engineering Season. Created in-situ by a robot, the pavilion is designed to respond to users over the 6 months of this exhibition. For example, if the integrated sensors detect a preferred 'spot' of human congregation, the idea is that the robot will create more shade for this area.
On a recent visit, there were workshops running for children (and adults!) to take part in the making process. Staff were also on hand to explain the ideas behind the Achim Menges design, including the fact that the structure's name comes from the insect that inspired the project's materiality; the Elyta Beetle.
The structure will remain, and develop, in the V&A's central courtyard until 6th November.
Entry to the museum is free. For more information, please click here.
