“Examples of memes are tunes, ideas, catchphrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or of building arches.”
-Richard Dawkins, A Selfish Gene
What Do You Meme? is a free, non-ticketed, exhibition celebrating memes within online cultures. It will show how they have moved a long way from websites such as Reddit, and 4chan, and how they have come to be used as a tool for communication across cultures. It will explore memes as an artistic practice that relate to people in a socio-political (Bernie and Hilary) and creative (Doge) way.
The exhibition will raise questions, and provide few answers. How is something as fluid as an ‘internet meme’ going to work outside of the internet? Does a meme lose its meaning and purpose IRL? Will the memes included in the exhibition become dated? Will memes ever be taken seriously by the art world? Who cares? One thing is for certain, What Do You Meme? will create some space for insights, and find out just how many layers of irony we are all on.
Drinks are avaliable to buy including a limited edition Meme Cocktail. Happy Hour is 6pm - 8pm.
What Do You Meme? is free to all, not ticketed, and open:
Thursday: 6pm - 10pm
Friday - Monday: 10am - 5 pm
