D.C. WANTS BORING ARCHITECTURE
Survey the recent buildings in Washington and you'll find a profusion of white-bread historical styles, Modernism with the crust cut off, stale brick structures, and sugar-glazed glass boxes. Other cities that call themselves world-class are exploring exciting new urban forms, yet the nation's capital seems to hesitate on a vision until something uninspiring is all that’s left.
What’s the cause of all this? Stop pointing fingers at the Height Act, the Historic Preservation Review Board, and the NIMBYs, and just admit it: When it comes down to an exhilarating built environment, we'd rather not. No more lying to ourselves. We desperately want D.C. to be boring.
