What if the world’s cities revered carbon as an asset in soil, plants and durable earthbound forms, and reduced carbon as a liability in the atmosphere? During this session, William McDonough will introduce the Carbon Positive City: a concept that integrates urban and agricultural development as a unified, productive and restorative system, thereby recognizing beneficial uses of carbon for short and long-term ecological, economic and social value. McDonough will explore the differences between “linear flow” in conventional urban development and “Circular Flow” in Cradle to Cradle® Urban Planning, in addition to how stakeholders can follow the Upcycle framework to reduce carbon in the atmosphere and optimize carbon as an asset. Following McDonough’s presentation, he will be joined on-stage by Jo Confino, Executive Editor of The Huffington Post’s Impact & Innovation section, who will dive deep into the multiple benefits of Carbon Positive Cities, real-life examples of progress, and the steps cities can take to drive innovation, strengthen economic growth, and take advantage of the readily available asset carbon.
Dr. Etosha Cave, Chief Science Officer and Co-Founder of Opus 12, will deliver opening remarks for William McDonough. Inspired by McDonough’s work as a student, she will share the work she is doing through her startup to recycle CO2 into higher value products for Earth, and someday for Mars.
