CB1 Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Emily Davis Adams, Somewhere Between. In a departure from her 2015 CB1 exhibition, which featured a single large-scale painting, the current show consists of a series of small works that extend her exploration of surfaces marked by human contact.
These new paintings explore the physical qualities of light as both representational object and abstraction. Adams renders simple still-life constructions made of paper and artificial light in oil on canvas, eschewing a focus on hand or process and emphasizing instead a delicate balance of illusionism and phenomenological experience.
Adams’ works draw from the constructed realities of artists such as Thomas Demand and Hiroshi Sugimoto, the perceptual considerations of the Light and Space artists, as well as the paintings of the Dutch Golden Age and 19th century American Luminists.
