"BODY OF WORK"
In this talk Stan Allen's will reflect on the longer trajectory of career as an architect, theorist, and educator, weaving together the themes of landscape, ecology and construction. He will discuss the seminal texts "Field Conditions" and "Landform Building", the recent built work as well as the projects for exhibitions in Rome and Venice. The work is presented as a larger question that concerns the way in which architects react to changing technologies and disciplinary concerns.
Stan Allen is an architect working in New York and professor at Princeton’s School of Architecture, where he also directs the Center for Architecture, Urbanism and Infrastructure. From 2002 - 2012, he served as Dean of the School. He holds degrees from Brown University, The Cooper Union and Princeton. After graduation he worked for Richard Meier in New York and Rafael Moneo in Madrid. In 1990 he established an independent practice, and since that time, has pursued parallel careers as educator, writer and architect. He has taught at Harvard, Columbia and Princeton, and his architectural firm SAA/Stan Allen Architect has realized buildings and urban projects in the United States, Latin America and Asia. Responding to the complexity of the modern city in creative ways, Stan Allen has developed an extensive catalogue of innovative design strategies, in particular looking at field theory, landscape architecture and ecology as models to revitalize the practice of architecture. Since 2009, he has received 3 P/A Awards, 5 AIA Awards, the John Q. Hejduk Award from Cooper Union, and an Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2011, Allen was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows and in 2012 he was inducted into the National Academy of Design. In 2016, he was one of 12 architects representing the United States in The Architectural Imagination, the American Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In addition to numerous articles and project reviews, his architectural work is published in Points + Lines: Diagrams and Projects for the City and his essays in Practice: Architecture, Technique and Representation. His most recent book is the edited volume Landform Building: Architecture’s New Terrain, Published by Lars Müller in 2011. Four Projects: A Stan Allen Sourcebook will be published in 2017 by Ohio State University and ORO Publishers.
