For the London Festival of Architecture 2017, Studio Egret West launch their first book, Framing Serendipity: An Approach to Evolving Places. Celebrating twelve years of the Studio’s experience, the accompanying exhibition displays the main theme of the book: a belief in the importance of storytelling and growing a narrative from the histories and textures of a place.
Rather than flattening the memories of existing communities, SEW believe that memory plays an active role in the creation, shaping and character of a new site in a continuum of past, present and future. We ask: what intrinsic value can be found in a place and how can it be reused? How can structures be re-appropriated and identities retained? How can this ethos be explored through aggregated architectural forms within responsive environments that amplify nature? What are the relationships that need to be forged and the boundaries transgressed to make these approaches possible?
