The Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) presents 23rd Biennial of Design (BIO 23). The event is one of the most comprehensive international exhibitions of contemporary design in Slovenia and Central Europe. This year’s renewed BIO 23 features fresh, surprising, innovative, and even revolutionary products, ideas, and concepts that are considered exceptional achievements of original vision in today’s world. As one of the oldest design exhibitions in Europe with a tradition of almost half a century, BIO is a relevant trademark on the map of today’s design. The works for the exhibition revolving around this year’s topic “Design Relations” have been selected by the renowned curators Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings from the Dutch studio Organisation in Design. This year’s topic chosen by the curators and entitled ‘Design Relations’ does not only expose the new and up-to-date ideas of contemporary design production, but also opens up a daring and critical cross section of everything that contemporary design reflects and describes in this very moment. What is the role of design today? How does design reflect the world around us? What is the counter-effect of design in our lives? The exhibition selection featuring works from 27 countries shows how modern technologies, digitalisation and globalisation, as well as nature and its resources influence designers and their creative work. The exhibits are divided into four main categories: technology, digitalisation, globalisation, and products; and subcategories: health; machines and processes; science (technology); back to crafts; counter reactions; data processing and graphic design (digitalisation); industrial leftovers; social/local; urban environments; and smart solutions (globalisation). The international jury consisting of Giulio Cappellini, Sven Jonke, Sophie Lovell, Jimmy MacDonald and Vasa J. Perović will select this year’s best works and the most resonant ideas, which at the opening of the Biennial will be presented with special BIO Design Awards. The BIO Gold Medal presented by Petrol, BIO Green Award, Honourable Mentions, and Awards for Student Works will be presented at the opening of the biennial on Thursday, 27 September 2012 after 7 pm at the Museum of Architecture and Design at the Fužine Castle in Ljubljana. BIO 23 accompanying programme In addition to the main exhibition, the extremely varied programme of accompanying events is packed with numerous exhibitions, creative workshops, screenings of design films, guided tours and discussions, presentations of exhibits, and other activities that make the Biennial complete. Part of the accompanying events planned in cooperation with many partners will take place in different locations in Ljubljana. These will include an exhibition of selected award-winning works from previous biennials at Kresija Gallery, an exhibition of Italian design at the Slovene Ethnographic Museum, an international symposium on service design and a special store of young Slovene designers and architects, which during BIO 23 will be a place to trade and socialise. As part of the RogLab pilot project, some of the Biennial events will take place in a container in front of the factory Rog, such as design workshops, whereas design enthusiasts will be able to meet on weekend evenings in Vander, the first design hotel in Ljubljana. The Biennial of Design is an international design event which for almost half a century has presented and promoted the current trends of world design. Since 1964 when the first BIO exhibition was organised, 22 international exhibitions have taken place. All selected works were presented in comprehensive BIO catalogues, which now have a cultural and historical value in the sphere of industrial design and have become important sources used by Slovene and foreign experts. http://www.bio.si
