La Cage aux Folles by Warren Techentin Saturday April 19th 4-8pm at the M&A courtyard in Silver Lake with DJ Pierrot (Mark Wright of the Vidéothèque, South Pasadena). La Cage Aux Folles by Warren Techentin explores the craft of bending, joining form, computational procedures, and fabrication processes in the making of a structure which also locates a variety of proto-domestic activities. Using small diameter steel tubes, our proposal explores the idea of constructing parametric surfaces with fields of linear strands which simultaneously define variable spatial conditions and structural matricies. La Cage aux Folles seeks to use ‘generative detailing’ to provide variation to both the individual structural members and the overall form – imparting various and ambiguous postures and porosities in terms of ‘use’ and in the way it is occupied. Through the use of computational procedures, we seek to extend the research already begun by Warren Plattner, Harry Bertoia, and Victorian Birdhouses, alongside a set of optical effects such as those associated with moire. In addition to the structural achievements, numerous spaces or nests will allow viewers to become users — with the hope that participants will feel compelled to enjoy the structure and the environment as they might a landscape.
