| American University of Beirut
Beirut, LBRelated
The Global Summer School (GSS) is a platform defined by ambitious, multi-scalar investigation on the implications of emergent techniques in our planned environments. Each year, international teams located in key cities around the globe explore a common agenda with projects that are deeply embedded in diverse local conditions. This intensive two week course connects each participant to ongoing research agendas in robotics, simulation, physical computing, parametric design, digital fabrication, and other relevant emerging design methodologies.
This year GSS Beirut, in collaboration with the American University of Beirut Department of Architecture & Design, will take place in one of Lebanon’s most iconic villages, Douma. Nestled in the mountains of North Lebanon, Douma remains one of the most truthful representations of authentic Lebanese heritage. In tackling this year’s GSS subject of public space and as part of the ongoing rehabilitation program of the village, GSS Beirut participants will be challenged to design and build a 1:1 curved surface shell structure using cutting edge technologies: parametric design tools used for advanced form finding (Rhino Vault, Grasshopper + Kangaroo) and digital fabrication (CNC Milling, 3d Printing, Laser cutting).
While speculating the local identity firmly rooted in traditional vaulting techniques, different methods of form finding will be examined throughout history and explored hands-on, starting with low tech analogue methods to the latest computational tools of structural optimization.
Date:
From 3rd to 16th July 2017
Eligibility
