The Julius Shulman Institute presents:
There is Only One Paul R. Williams: A Portrait by Janna Ireland.
L.A.-based photographer Janna Ireland takes a timely and nuanced look at the built legacy of architect Paul R. Williams. In his five-decade career, Williams designed nearly 3,000 buildings that deeply influenced the image of Los Angeles. Over the course of one year, Ireland explored his public and private buildings, getting to know who Williams was in the process. The resulting black and photographs expose the underlying themes of identity and race, domesticity and place, and isolation and time intrinsic to Williams’ works. Together, Ireland and Williams are a poignant match; the layered visions of a contemporary artist and historic African-American architect reveal in longstanding architectural lines and forms distinct personality and significance.
Framed exhibition works, as well as a limited run of photographic prints, are available for purchase. Proceeds benefit the Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury University – making ongoing support for developing new talents in architectural photography possible.
