The museum is one of the most important buildings to have been commissioned in China in recent times.
Sutherland Hussey, a former nominee for the RIBA Stirling prize for architecture, beat competition from France and China for the £240 million contract.
It is hoped the building, which is to be symbolic of the country’s past and present, will be completed in three years.
It will occupy a full square at the centre of Cheng Du city, and the design of the copper exterior will allow the public to wander into the heart of the museum and view the exhibits through glass walls.
Charlie Sutherland, of Sutherland Hussey, said: “The requirement of the brief was not enough to fill the full size of the square.
“We made it do that by manipulating the form of the building to contain public space within it.”
