New Malmo Concert Hall, Conference Center & Hotel Competition
Register/Submit: Wednesday, June 04, 2008

The city of Malmo has the aspiration to create a high-quality combined centre for concerts, conferences/meetings and hotel. The centre will, together with the connecting parts of the city, create a complex with character and become one of the city’s top attractions of national as well as international importance. The centre will boost the profile of Malmo as an attractive and sustainable city with high consciousness of the importance of the city environment, culture and tourism. The task is, therefore, to create brand buildings, sustainable and of top quality, living up to the expectations on an up-to-date conference centre with hotel and a modern concert hall with various musical events and where both functions offer stimulating public space.

The aspiration is also to create a meeting-point where people with varied experiences can meet in a culturally manifold environment for all sorts of activities and events. The concert and conference activities and the hotel shall form the core of these, which will also include exhibitions, public performances of different size, coffee shop areas and areas for conferences and lectures, shops with a tourist and cultural touch etc. Moreover, the centre should enrich and strengthen city life and provide a connecting link between old and new, between the city centre and the Western harbour.

The task includes the creation of a park and canal space that fulfils important functions. The new park will become the most important park and meeting-place at Universitetsholmen that also constitutes a close-to-the-city centre attraction in its interplay with the new erections. The park must have a modern and urban idiom that is both challenging and tempting in shape as well as in use of material. This also gives ample opportunities for an exciting and enriching artistic adornment.

The shaping of the buildings, meeting places, park and canal should have as starting point sustainability in a wide sense of the word, with everything from energy saving technology and environment friendly materials to questions of safety.

Aim and Scope
The project is, in the main, to design the shaping of the contest site with special focus on establishments for concerts, conferences and hotel and the surrounding public space with park and canal.

The contestants shall suggest how the establishments for concerts, conferences and hotel inclusive necessary parking facilities will be erected, financed, owned and administered. A project plan for the administration and operation of the conference and hotel establishments must be included. The concert hall part is presupposed to be used by Malmö Symphonic Orchestra. This part will therefore after the erection is let with leasehold contract, alternatively be transferred, to The City of Malmö.

Private land is, according to the future detailed plan for concerts, conferences and hotel, presupposed to be let with leasehold contract to the person who is elected winner of the Design and site development contest.

Public place, according to the future detailed plan is presupposed to be designed, projected and erected by The City of Malmo through the Street Office. The City of Malmo reserves the right to wholly or partly use the projects the contestants have handed in concerning shaping of public space. The costs for this shall be considered to be covered by the remuneration given to the invited contestants.
