2008 AIA New Practices New York Competition
Register: Friday, May 16, 2008
Submit: Friday, May 30, 2008
New Practices New York 2008 is the second juried portfolio competition and exhibition in a new biennial tradition sponsored by the New Practices Committee of the AIA New York Chapter. It serves as a platform to recognize and promote new, innovative and emerging architecture firms within New York City that have undertaken unique and commendable strategies - both in the projects they undertake and the practices they have established. Distinguishing this award from others given to new practices is the attention focused on how the winning firms are uniquely shaped to better facilitate the type of projects that they undertake. This competition brief asks firms to submit a “Mini Portfolio” (8-1/2” x 11”, 10 pages maximum) along with a “Practice Narrative” (500 words maximum) that should be directed toward answering the following questions: Methods of Collaboration and Integrated Practice How do you, as design professionals, work together in different or more supportive ways than traditional practice? How have concepts of collaboration and integration influenced the structure of your practice and the type of work it undertakes? Critical Practice How does your practice respond to the variety of forces that influence the critical thinking about, designing of, and constructing within our contemporary condition, both local and global? Variety of Project Experience Why do you choose to undertake certain projects and not others? Location & Nature of Practice Some new practices call for new types of work environments. Does the location or layout of your office influence how you practice? 2008 registrations are due by May 16, 2008; submissions are due by May 30, 2008.
