“OUTSIDE/INSIDE” AT GENSLER FEATURES TOP EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS Leading Architecture Firm Hosts Exhibition of International Center of Photography Alumni New York, NY — The New York office of Gensler, the global architecture and design firm, is hosting a photography exhibit from April 1 through May 23, 2008 that features twelve alumni from the School of the International Center of Photography (ICP). Founded in 1974, the New York City-based ICP is both a museum and one of the largest photography schools in the world. “Outside/Inside” represents an international group of emerging photographic artists, whose work explores dichotomies and nuance in the built environment. The exhibition will hang in the gallery space of Gensler New York’s Rockefeller Center office and will be available for viewing by appointment from 10am to 4pm, Monday through Friday; please call 212.492.1433 to schedule an appointment. “Outside/Inside” extends ICP’s dedication to exploring the possibilities of the photographic medium—from Catherine Kunkemueller’s interiors that evoke psychological mini-dramas to documentary landscapes by Ray Klimek that bleakly expose the impact of coal mining on small towns. Artists include: Charles Atherton, Marla Caplan, Ray Klimek, Tim Lehmacher, Matthew Monteith, Noemi Nin Pflüger, Catherine Kunkemueller, Jeff Luckey, Mauro Restiffe, Stuart O’Sullivan, Ryan Thatcher, and Cory Treadway. Gensler’s long-standing relationship with ICP dates to 1999, when Gensler designed the school for ICP at 1114 Avenue of the Americas on Grace Plaza. The 27,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility is marked by a glass pavilion entrance and includes darkrooms, digital labs, and photo studios, as well as a library and administrative offices. “Outside/Inside” is the latest installment in Gensler New York’s rotating exhibition program. “We really saw this space as an opportunity to foster creativity and collaboration,” says Maddy Burke-Vigeland, Gensler principal and one of the exhibition organizers, “it’s a great way to bring architecture, design, and the arts together.” Past exhibitions featured portraits from the Art Students League and paintings by New York–based artist C.J. Collins. Gensler has received acclaim for integrating original artwork into its interiors projects. The firm’s Rockefeller Center office features a two-story wraparound mural by graffiti artist Jose Soto, and the New York headquarters of Bertelsmann Direct North America showcases six cutting-edge street artists, each with a distinctive style. Artists Gary Baseman, best known for the animated series “Teachers Pet,” and Tristan Eaton of Kid Robot, brought a hip vibe to advertising company Bartle Bogle Hegarty’s (BBH) Gensler-designed offices. About Gensler Gensler is a leading global design, planning, and strategic consulting firm, with more than 3,000 professionals networked across 30 offices on five continents. For over 40 years, Gensler has collaborated with clients to create places that enhance organizational performance, achieve measurable business goals, and enrich people and communities. The recipient of four prestigious Business Week/Architectural Record Awards, Gensler is consistently ranked as the leading architecture and interior design firm in industry surveys. For its ongoing commitment to the advancement of sustainable design, Gensler received the Leadership Award from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2005. Gensler New York has collaborated with some of the world’s leading cultural institutions including The New Museum in New York City (2007) and The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA (opening June 2008).
