2009 Delta Cup - International Solar Building Design Competition

GOAL OF COMPETITION:
Combined with the reconstruction after Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province, the competition with a theme of “Sunshine and Hope” is facing the whole world to collect design scheme of rural “Sunshine primary school” and some of awarded submissions will be put into construction in disaster area.

Taking the competition as a platform let’s open out technology of solar building, promulgate the concept of sustainable operation, express our love and responsibility to the children in disaster area and make their life and studying filled with gladness, hope and genial sunshine.

2. Rural Sunshine Primary School in Mian Yang area.

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Institutes of architectural design, colleges and universities, research institutions and research and manufacture enterprises of solar energy are welcome to make competition groups with professionals of architecture, structure and equipment to attend the competition.

One work only has one registration number. The number should be indicated in the top left corner of each submission work with height in 6mm. Registration time: 25th June, 2008 - 1st December, 2008.
  • Participants must agree that the Organizing Committee may publish, print, exhibit and apply their works in public.
  • The authors whose works are edited into the publication should cooperate with the Organizing Committee to adjust their works according to the requirements of printing.

GECKO: Think Forward

Création Baumann to award prizes for innovative projects using GECKO

In several years of research and development work, Création Baumann developed a silicon-coated self-adhesive textile that can be attached directly to glass and removed again without leaving any residues: GECKO - a world novelty ensuring privacy and glare protection and an effective room design tool.

Within the scope of this competition, projects involving the exemplary and innovative use of GECKO are to be submitted to Création Baumann for appraisal. On the one hand, we are interested in solutions focusing on the functional aspects of the product; on the other, we are interested in projects based on a particularly creative use of the product. Architects, planers, civil engineers, and interior architects with corresponding degrees in architecture, interior architecture, civil engineering, or urban planning are all eligible for participation.

The total prize money amounts to EURO 22,500.00. The best projects in the three categories Functionality, Innovation, and Aesthetics, will be chosen and granted awards. An expert panel of five jurors will assess the projects to be submitted to Création Baumann by March 31, 2009. The festive award ceremony will be held in the early summer of 2009.

The following are entitled to enter the “GECKO: Think Forward” competition: architects, planners, civil engineers and interior architects with a degree in architecture, interior architecture, civil engineering or urban planning.

All documentation must be submitted to Création Baumann by 31 March 2009 at the latest.

Open Architecture Challenge 2009

Enter the 2009 Open Architecture Challenge.

In the United States alone more than 6 million students spend much of their day in “portable” classrooms. Anyone who has spent time in one of these classrooms knows that we can do better.

In 2003, the Modular Building Institute estimated that more than 220,000 K-12 portable classrooms were in use by public school systems. Because school systems cannot readily access capital funding, temporary and makeshift classrooms have become an unintended fixture of many educational campuses.

In Florida alone, 75 percent of a school’s portables are now counted as permanent classroom space.

The Competition:

Each year Architecture for Humanity’s Open Architecture Challenge design competition brings public attention to inequities in the built environment affecting the health, prosperity and well being of under-served communities. In 2009 the Open Architecture Challenge will focus on the issue of portable classrooms.

The Open Architecture Challenge will tackle the health, environmental and performance concerns associated with today’s portable schools. New classroom design solutions will be implemented across the nation. Students and teachers understand best what makes a learning space work. The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge will invite them to partner with architects in their community to design better, greener classrooms for their schools.

Entrants will be required to develop a design for an existing student body and demonstrate student participation throughout the design process. The competition will be promoted throughout the global design community and timed to coincide with the academic calendar to encourage student involvement. A curriculum package will be developed in tandem with the competition. The curriculum will be distributed by mail and delivered digitally to schools across the country through partnerships with educational organizations. An inter-disciplinary team of architects, educators and others will jury the entries. The winning design will be built with funds raised as a result of the competition.

All of the designs entered into the competition will be displayed in classrooms across the country, and made available for download on the Open Architecture Network. By sharing the designs-including CAD files-freely, we aim to give school systems access to hundreds of sustainable alternatives to portable classrooms and to impact decision-making where it matters most-at the local level.

Goals:

The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge aims to use architecture and design as a vehicle for strengthening communities by:

Offering innovative and viable alternatives to traditional portable classrooms, introducing K-12 students to architecture, spatial planning and 3D modeling, teaching students, faculty and parents about how buildings impact the environment, and advocating for greener, healthier, more conducive learning environments.

Teachers and Students know what makes a classroom work. Lets let them design the classroom of the future.

The American Architecture Awards 2009

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, together with Metropolitan Arts Press, have organized The American Architecture Awards as away in which to honor the best, new significant buildings and landscape and planning projects designed and/or built in the United States and abroad by the most important architects and planners practicing nationally and internationally.

The American Architecture Awards gives an important overview of the current aesthetic direction of today’s commercial, corporate, institutional, and residential work in the United States to the real estate, banking, business, and corporate community, as well as to the press and general public.

The program is one of the Museum’s most important public education outreach initiatives produced throughout the year—to both the Museum’s U.S. and international audience.

The American Architecture Awards are dedicated to the recognition of excellence in architecture and urbanism in the United States.

The program pays tribute to new developments in design and underscores the directions and understanding of current cutting-edge processes consistent with today’s design thinking.

This year’s program honors new (2006-2007) corporate, institutional, commercial, residential architecture, interiors, and urban planning, designed for both built and unbuilt projects alike.

ELIGIBILITY

All submissions must be the work of American architects and architectural firms either working nationally or internationally for projects both in the U.S. and abroad.
International architecture firms headquartered outside the United States are eligible to enter projects built, or to be built, in the U.S. only.

CRITERIA

Criteria for submissions includes any commercial, corporate, institutional, or residential building type or urban planning project, built or unbuilt in the U.S., designed since January 1, 2007.

Unbuilt projects are eligible only when a client is named.

Building types and categories are: corporate headquarters and office facilities, retail, hospitality, institutional, health care, government, transportation, educational, and residential and interiors of any kind, including renovations and restorations, and urban planning projects. Previously awarded buildings by the Museum are not eligible.

JURY FOR AWARDS

A jury of recognized design practitioners, business professionals, educators, and critics will review the submissions and select winning projects for awards. Usually the jury takes place abroad.

Previous juries have been held under the auspicious of the following professional associations: The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland; The National Association of Finnish Architects; The Lithuanian Society of Architects; and The Norske Arkitekters Landsforbund; and The National Council of Spanish Architects. Each Submission is Juried Anonymously.

RESULTS

Selected and awarded recipients will be required to prepare either framed drawings or photographic panels and models for exhibition.

The Museum will exhibit the awarded projects in an exhibition format and publish the selected winners either on the Museum’s website or in a catalogue by Metropolitan Arts Press or both.

Previous exhibitions have taken place in Thessaloniki, Greece; Milan, Italy; Dublin, Ireland; and Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.

Architects, associate architects, clients, developers, landscape architects, planners, contractors, and structural engineers are cited for their individual contributions.

09 Skyscraper International Design Competition

The annual Skyscraper Competition organized by eVolo has become an important architectural prize with high media attention.

The 2008 edition was published by more than ten architecture and design magazines and by several news, fashion, and art publications.

The eVolo Book with the best projects of the first three years has received excellent reviews and has been included in the catalog for the Book Expo America, Frankfurt Book Fair, and Beijing Book Fair.

For the 2009 edition eVolo invites architects, engineers, and designers to continue exploring on new ideas and concepts for vertical density.

Skyscrapers have been springing up in fast-developing countries without careful consideration of the urban fabric, environmental effects, and quality of life.

The 2009 competition calls for innovative designs for the XXI Century which takes into consideration the historical and social context, the existing urban fabric, the human scale, and the environment.

There is no restriction on site, height or shape.

The idea is to give the designers enough freedom to address the challenge in the most creative and innovative way.

Designs must be technologically feasible and environmentally responsible.

The projects should also investigate on the urban and private space as well as the definition of new programmes for a vertical structure.

The iF concept award 2009

The iF concept award challenges up-and-coming, young designers from around the globe to compete. Students from any design, architecture, engineering and marketing major as well as young professionals from the mentioned fields (having graduated within the last two years) are very welcome to enter the competition.

A preselection jury of internationally renowned experts will select a “shortlist” (consisting of 300 entries) from the total pool of entries. Last year, more than 2,100 entries were received for the iF concept award, submitted by 1,350 contestants from 37 different nations. Respected specialists will then choose the “Best 100”, the award winners of the iF concept award, during the final Adjudication publicly on the first day of the CeBIT show (03.03.2009) in Hannover, Germany. They will also establish, who of the winners will be awarded a share of the prize purse. This will be announced during the awards ceremony only days later (07.03.2009). In the evening all participants of the ceremony will celebrate in the iF lounge.

The exhibition of the iF concept award 2009 during the CeBIT show is not only for winners. Newcomers will have the option to promote themselves through their work and the public will be able to experience and discover the newcomers and the iF concept award in all its shades. Seeing that, all exactable entries will be shown in a special exhibition during the CeBIT.

What’s new?

For the first time all Entries will be evaluated by a representative cross-section of the population consisting of 100 test persons. The survey will be conducted using an evaluation questionnaire developed by ud GmbH with emphasis on the criteria of universal design.

A point system will be used to determine the winners of a “universal design consumer favorite 09” award. An approval rating of at least 75% is necessary.

2009 Rudy Bruner Award

About the Rudy Bruner Award:

The Rudy Bruner Award is given to urban places that demonstrate the successful integration of effective process, meaningful values and good design. RBA winners are distinguished by their social, economic and environmental contributions to the urban built environment, and often provide innovative solutions to our cities most challenging problems.

The RBA awards one Gold Medal of $50,000 and four Silver Medals of $10,000 each. Case studies of winners are published on line at http://www.brunerfoundation.org and in a book distributed by the Bruner Foundation.

Discarded Dreams Mattress Recycling Competition

What can you do with a million mattresses?

Mattresses are our friends. For years, mattresses selflessly serve our sleeping pleasure. We should all be grateful for our mattresses; after all, most of us were conceived on one.

Why, then, are our mattresses being abandoned in dumps and left to the seagulls? Every year in the U.S. 40 million mattresses get thrown in the trash. Don’t our mattresses deserve another chance?

The problem is, the nature and construction of mattresses has made them difficult to dispose of. They often end up in landfills because they cannot be broken down and their component parts are hard to utilize. Until now:

Challenge

Architecture for Humanity and Rubicon National Social Innovations invite entrants to create innovative ways of converting used mattresses into useful products.
The competition aims to encourage entrants to form groups capable of creating a consumer product, instructions detailing how to make the product, and a plan for production on a larger scale.
Entrants must create designs that take into account the volume of mattress waste generated each year.
Groups are encouraged to utilize local resources, including existing manufacturing facilities and other waste products.

Design Constraints

Design Teams should consider the following:

  • 80% of final product must come from the mattress itself. Preference will be given to entries whose product utilizes all mattress parts and leaves minimum unused materials.
  • The designs will be judged on over-all product design, low-cost deconstruction and manufacturing, and innovative re-use of materials to create an amazing, affordable consumer product.
  • Additional materials may be included, but must be recycled and/or waste products. No “virgin” materials.
  • Processing and production needs to be replicable at a large scale (approximately 10,000 mattresses per month per facility).
  • Entries must include a detailed description of de-construction and production process either by diagrams or text. Entrants are encouraged to use readily available tools and industrial machines.
  • Size of mattress may vary and can be decided by the entrant. See ‘Resources’ for technical information.
  • Teams are limited to up to 5 individuals.
  • Priority will also be given to designs with cost-effective manufacturing processes.
  • The Super Prize goes out to the team that has the most fun!

The International Architecture Awards 2009

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design in conjunction with Metropolitan Arts Press and the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design, and Urban Studies, invite entries for The International Architecture Awards®— an Exhibition and Distinguished Building Awards Program for the Best New World Architecture for 2009.

The International Architecture Awards® gives an important overview of the current direction of today’s global commercial, corporate, institutional, and residential work to the real estate, banking, business, and corporate community, as well as to the international press and general public.

The International Architecture Awards® Exhibition and Distinguished Awards Program is dedicated to the recognition of Design Excellence in architecture produced around the world. The emphasis is on design innovation, engineering, use of new materials, and a sensitivity to the environment. We look forward to honoring the broad range of quality projects submitted this year.

ELIGIBILITY
All submissions must be the work of architects and architectural firms either working nationally or internationally for both projects in their own countries or abroad.

CRITERIA
The criteria for submissions includes any commercial, corporate, institutional, or residential interior, built or unbuilt, and designed, completed, or under construction as of January 1, 2005 to 2008.

Unbuilt projects are eligible only when a client is named. Building types and categories are: skyscrapers; corporate headquarters and office facilities; single and multi-family housing; retail, hospitality, institutional, health care, governmental, transportation, educational, and residential projects; as well as, interiors of any kind; including renovations and restoration; and urban planning projects. Buildings already awarded with “The International Architecture Award” are not eligible.

JURIED EXHIBITION/AWARDS
A jury of recognized business professionals, educators, and critics will review the submissions and select winning projects for Awards and for Exhibition. In Spring 2009, a public announcement of the Awards will be made officially to the press and to the public.

In addition to the Distinguished Building Awards, the Museum will mount an exhibition to honor the projects selected for their Design Excellence. Selected recipients will be required to prepare framed originals and models for the Exhibition. Architects, clients, developers, contractors, and structural engineers will be cited for their individual contributions.

Shinkenchiku International Residential Competition 2008

Four Square House Design Problem: Homage to John Hejduk

John Hejduk introduced us to the Nine Square Grid design problem and we, his audience, enjoyed and learned from his variations on the theme. I would like to make this proposal honouring his memory.

I will call it the Four Square House design problem. In a hypothetical Garden City grid of 36m by 36m, the assignment is to design four houses in any configuration, having as its only restriction that they should not exceed 162m2 and that each possess a garage and garden, “technique and nature” combined in the given 9m2 outlines. This requires a consideration of issues such as orientation, contiguity, privacy, construction, spatial structure: a series of issues that ultimately engage the neglected notion of typology . Obviously the extension of the single block to a larger area should be taken into account and in addition a certain hint about the materiality and the character of the ideal Garden City that comes as a result of the appearance of this new type.

* Complete all drawings, illustrative materials, and texts on two sheets of A1 size (594mm×841mm). Do not use a panel.
* As well as the two A1 sheet papers, the entrant is requested to submit digital data of the two separate sheets. (PDF or JPEG format ×2—2,500pixel×3,000pixel, 72dpi)Digital data are to be compiled and burned onto CD-R or DVD-R.
* Also, all texts appeared in the two A1 sheets should be attached as text files with the digital data.

No registration is necessary for entry in this competition.
Entries must never have been made public in any form previously. Nor can they be submitted simultaneously to any other competition.
The hosts reserve publication rights with regard to all entries.

Prisoned 2009 Design Competition

Socio Design is a foundation that strives to encourage social change through design-based dialog, a dialog fostered by an annual international student architecture competition.

Prisoned, this year’s competition, scrutinizes the role of prison architecture in today’s world. What effect do their designs have on their employees, their occupants, their adjacent societies?

Prisoned asks that all students design a philosophy on what imprisonment is or should be, and create an architectural design to express that philosophy. Students from all backgrounds are welcome to participate.
