The XXIV World Congress of Architecture will be held in Tokyo during the autumn months of 2011 – just 12 years since the first congress was hosted by Beijing in 1999. The theme of the XXIV World Congress, “Design 2050,” will provide the opportunity for architects from all over the world to exchange views and share their visions of sustainable architecture, as well as help define the immediate future for the world’s cities and the environment. Tokyo is a fascinating city where the past meets the present and Japanese tradition coexists with contemporary culture. Such diverse contrasts will be evident just outside the main venue for the congress, where the Royal Palace and Akihabara (Japan’s premier showcase for state-of-the-art consumer electronics) are located in the same neighborhood.
Tokyo’s exemplary economic growth during the past several decades has fueled its development as a viably sustainable city. Consequently, Tokyo in itself is a harbinger of what we may expect from sustainable architecture by the year 2050. With this in mind, participants at the XXIV World Congress can expect to be welcomed and embraced by Japan’s rich architectural culture, which showcases they unique, yet contemporary, face of Japan.

The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch Exhibition Gallery, sixth floor
This retrospective, presented in collaboration with a consortium of the three Bauhaus collections in Germany (Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin; Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau; and Klassik Stiftung Weimar), is the first comprehensive treatment of the Bauhaus at MoMA since 1938 and the first major show in the United States on the subject in decades. With a wide diversity of objects, including examples of industrial design, furniture, graphics, film, photography, book design, weaving, theater, painting, and sculpture, the exhibition will highlight the school’s revolutionary ideas of artistic education and production, as well as its enduring influence. Several of the key objects in the exhibition have never been shown in the U.S. Representing an innovative pedagogical approach, works by Bauhaus masters such as Walter Gropius, Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, László Moholy-Nagy, Johannes Itten, and Paul Klee will be joined by little-known student work created in the school’s workshops. Other important themes that will be explored in the exhibition and catalogue are the school’s strategy of self-promotion, its connection with industrial production and commerce and the question of authorship. After the exhibition is presented at the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin in summer 2009 for the ninetieth anniversary of the school’s foundation, the show will travel to New York during MoMA’s eightieth anniversary year.
The exhibition is organized by Barry Bergdoll, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design; Andres Lepik, Curator, Department of Architecture and Design; and Dara Kiese, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art.

This exhibition brings together for the first time over one hundred photographs and paintings by two of America’s best-known artists: Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) and Ansel Adams (1902-1984). O’Keeffe and Adams met in 1929 when both were in Taos, New Mexico, and began a lifelong friendship based on a profound shared appreciation for the natural world. Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: Natural Affinities establishes the artists’ skill at capturing the essence of the world around them and reveals numerous parallels between their distinctive visions of nature.

Robert Frank’s The Americans (first published in France in 1958 and in the United States in 1959) is widely celebrated as the most important photography book to appear since World War II. Featuring 83 photographs made largely in 1955 and 1956 while Frank traveled the United States, the project looked beneath the surface of American life to reveal a profound sense of alienation, angst, and loneliness. Frank’s prescient photographs redefined the icons of America, demonstrating that cars, jukeboxes, gas stations, diners, and even the road itself were telling symbols of contemporary life. Frank’s style — distinguished by seemingly loose, casual compositions, often with rough, blurred, out-of-focus foregrounds and tilted horizons — was just as controversial and influential as his subject matter. The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the publication by presenting all 83 photographs in the order established by the book, accompanied by a detailed examination of the project, its relationship to Frank’s earlier work, and its impact on his later art.

This year’s theme “The Ecology of Inequality” is an examination of the systems, infrastructure and design processes that create or perpetuate the socio-economic and environmental stratification of our society. Recent national events—economic and environmental crises, the pending election etc. have forced the design professions to examine the first principle of ecology “that each living organism has an ongoing and continual relationship with every other element that makes up its environment.” An ecosystem can be defined as “any situation where there is interaction between organisms and their environment.” As quoted, Bruce Mau’s work belongs to a growing body of voices that calls for a thorough assessment of how our existing systems lead to disenfranchised communities, a growing schism between the affluent and poor, and damaged ecosystems.
What is the relationship between urbanism and suburbanism? How does the ever-growing water crisis relate to race and culture? What does design relate to exploding health crises, on a global scale?
Conference sessions will evaluate the social conditions, historical precedents and design decisions that have led to today’s conditions. The conference will also discuss contemporary approaches that are confronting the current power structure, or ones that are seeking to establish new, justice-oriented design strategies that replace the ecology of inequality with ecologies of equity.

Bold Plans. Big Dreams. This is the legacy of the Plan of Chicago. In 1909, Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett collaborated with the Commercial Club of Chicago and others to create a new plan for the greater Chicago region. Today, their Plan still inspires us to be visionary, think regionally, recognize the value of beauty and conservation, and to plan – and implement – systematically.
The year 2009 will be a time to look back 100 years for inspiration, and appreciate the big dreams that led to Chicago’s sweeping lakefront, the “emerald necklace” of County Forest Preserves, and a tradition of thinking comprehensively about the region’s development.
The Centennial also is an opportunity to make and implement bold plans for the 21st Century that build on the 1909 Burnham Plan’s “…steady determination to bring about the very best conditions of city life for all the people…”

A utopian visionary, Le Corbusier was both innovative and influential in architecture, urbanism, art and theory. Across the world, his revolutionary designs were radical yet practical making him an instrumental figure in the development of Modernism. His buildings are credited with expressing a complex understanding of Modernity’s impact. Many of his ideas on urban living became the blueprint for post-war reconstruction, while the failures of his imitators led to his being blamed for the problems of modern urbanism. Since his death in 1965, Le Corbusier’s contributions have been hotly contested making him without a doubt one of the most admired and most maligned figures of the twentieth century. This symposium will explore the work, writings and legacy of this important and controversial modernist and their relationship to contemporary architecture, art and urbanism.

Patterns of Speculation: J MAYER H. joins two modes of exhibiting architecture in a gallery — installation and documentation — to present a unique, hybrid environment. The first solo museum exhibition to focus on this internationally recognized, Berlin-based studio, Patterns of Speculation offers a kind of dreamscape: a chamber of hypnotic imagery in which sound and light are set within a three-dimensional matrix of constructed and graphic elements. Data protection patterns serve as the source material for the installation. These patterns — which are used to conceal information, similar to the lining on the inside of bank envelopes — are translated into different scales and media, from the freestanding modules to frameworks for projected imagery and sound, as well as models for the designs of the depicted buildings. Long a subject of fascination and object of research for J. MAYER H., the patterns are presented here as the precondition or pretext for the studio’s architecture, a code that lies at the core of its design language.
