Intercon from Barcelona shared their recently shortlisted proposal in the 2014 Dubai International INDEX Contemporary Majlis Design Competiton.
With the theme "Design in Motion" for this year's competition, design professionals worldwide were invited to give their own contemporary -- and sustainable -- interpretation to the Arabic interior design tradition of The Majlis, or "a place of sitting."
Along with the other shortlisted entries, Intercon's Contemporary Majlis will be displayed at the 2014 INDEX International Design Exhibition on May 19-22.
Check out the proposal below.
"Throughout history the majlis has been the place where stories were told and experiences shared, in the times of the nomads it travelled from place to place.
By Design in Motion, our idea is to create a floating majlis that would move daily. This would be used as a place to discuss issues by reduced groups of designers, decision makers and local inhabitants. Evaluating both the impact of what has been done in the past and that what is planned for the future, all on the actual site and from the vantage point that the sea would offer."
"The design concept is a tribute to the rich tradition and heritage of the Emirati fishermen. Mimicking the fish traps for its ideal form for our majlis, we have used materials that are reused, recycled and up cycled, all of which are produced and disposed off locally, from the oil barrels through to the fishermen’s nylon nets."
"The majlis will be dragged by boats and moored into position during the evenings, whereupon the invited guests would come aboard and the discussions would begin. The next day it would be moved again and so on and our floating majlis would contribute to spreading the awareness of our actions on a growing city."
