Submit your design for integrating building enclosure and structure and help solve the world’s energy crisis.
The Metals in Construction magazine 2017 Design Challenge invites architects and engineers to submit their vision for reducing energy consumption in the built environment by integrating the enclosure of a high-rise building with its primary structure.
A hybrid frame and skin structure can reduce embodied energy by cutting down on the materials used in constructing the building. Studies show that the CO2 emissions embodied in these materials account for 50 to 300 percent of the building’s lifetime energy consumption.
This competition challenges designers to minimize embodied energy in the design of a steel-framed high-rise by substituting a hybrid frame and skin structure for the typical aluminum and glass curtain wall. Entries will be judged on the reduction of building mass (embodied energy) achieved while maintaining the building’s resistance to wind and seismic forces.
The magazine will award a $15,000 cash prize to the design judged to exhibit the greatest innovation, energy efficiency, structural performance, and aesthetic integrity in achieving these objectives. The grand prizewinner will be announced and the winning design featured prominently in a half-day ideas conference at New York City’s TimesCenter on February 24, 2017. The deadline for entries is February 1, 2017.

About the Metals in Construction magazine Design Challenge
Now in its second year, the Metals in Construction magazine Design Challenge was established to bring attention to environmental initiatives within the architecture world. Like the 2017 competition, the inaugural challenge was inspired by the President’s Climate Action Plan and the Architecture 2030 Challenge.
The “Reimagine a New York City Icon” competition, the 2016 Design Challenge sponsored by Metals in Construction magazine and the Ornamental Metal Institute of New York, invited architects, engineers, students, designers, and others from all over the world to submit their vision for recladding 200 Park Avenue (formerly the Pan Am Building, now the MetLife Building), which was built a half-century ago as the world’s largest corporate structure.
