Kohn Pedersen Fox and Heatherwick Studio had the winning bid to design Changi Airport's new Terminal 5 in Singapore. Their team – which includes Architects 61, James Corner Field Operations, The Fountain Workshop, Speirs + Major, Lichtvision Design, and Bruce Mau Design with Entro — was one of three groups appointed by Changi Airport Group (CAG) last week to provide architectural design and engineering services for the new terminal.

The appointed architecture and engineering teams, referred to as the Master Building Consultants, include:

  • Architectural design services: KPF (Singapore) Pte Ltd, in partnership with Heatherwick Studio and Architects 61 Private Limited
  • Engineering services: Arup Singapore Private Limited, Mott MacDonald Singapore Pte Limited, and Surbana Jurong Consultants Pte Ltd
  • Design services for commercial spaces: DP Architects Pte Ltd

Although renderings of Terminal 5 haven't been released yet, the Master Building Consultants will be in charge of designing the Main Terminal Building, Satellite Terminal Building, Ground Transportation Centre and the Primary Landside Roadway.

Terminal 5 is part of the larger Changi East project, which will provide the much-needed extra capacity to accommodate up to 50 million passengers per year and 100 more aircraft stands. According to CAG, the new development will include a three-runway system, cargo complexes, and other supporting aviation and ground transit infrastructure.

Huh, looks like the same formula for Hudson Yards: corporate conservative (banal) with a kooky gadget centerpiece. Just like the 80s.
