It's time for another project feature from the Mapo Oil Reserve Base design competition we recently covered: "Sangam Culture Storage" from second-prize entry winner Kyuseon Hong.
Sangam Culture Storage addresses the need of an art and culture facility for the Mapo Oil site, which is already surrounded by notable sports arenas like the Sangam World Cup Stadium, educational facilities, and residential areas. The project transforms the deserted Mapo oil tanks into an art boulevard, exhibition hall, a museum, an aquarium restaurant, and a theater.

Project description:
"Mapo Oil Reserve, located next to Sangam World Cup Stadium had been remained as a limited access zone in the city for decades while silently preparing an emergency situation of our energy use. This enclosed government controlled space is now seeking for the possibility of a rebirth as a public realm for Seoul citizen’s use. To achieve this, this proposal is aiming to reactivate the site and its location by redefining the pre-existed historical meanings of the site and embedded needs around it."
"SITE
Looking around the contexts adjacent to the site, we can find several large sports related facilities including World Cup stadium, public green parks. Especially, like many other locations in Seoul, there exist high density residential areas and a large number of educational facilities supporting those as a consequence; however, there is not enough culture and art related space in this region, which can reinforcing the quality of citizen’s life in this neighborhoods."
"This project is focusing on the evident missing puzzle of the location regarding those aspects of site, and we propose an ‘Art and Culture related performing facility’ which will be open to every citizen providing a breathing room in this quick, busy city."
"ART BOULEVARD in the FOREST'
We propose an ‘Art boulevard in the Forest’ harmonized with existing dynamic topography, forest and hidden oil tanks. From now on, these 5 existing tanks, contained the physical energy for our society will be transformed into the place where storing our cultural energy and vision to prepare the future by sorting, supporting and growing the cultural seeds around us with enormous potentials."
"For this purpose, the priority of all the exhibition and performance space will be given to the rookies to provide them more opportunities and supporting infrastructure for their new dreams and visions to grow continuously in stable environment. Artist residence will also give them chances to have their own working spaces for a specific time period to support their growth."
"The complex will be consisted of Light play, Aquarium Restaurant, Spiral gallery, Young theatre and Panorama exhibition hall, and these will be connected with Art Boulevard to provide exciting smooth path with various cultural art performance at every corner. We visit the venue to enjoy our recreation, and the young artists make their visions and dreams come true in Sangam culture storage."
