Six finalists listed for last phase of the Canadian National Holocaust Monument competition

By Bustler Editors|

Wednesday, Oct 30, 2013

The future National Holocaust Monument will be built in the Canadian capital of Ottawa.

Six finalist teams were invited to develop design concepts for the National Holocaust Monument that will be built in the Canadian capital of Ottawa. The two-phase national competition began with a Call for Qualifications in May 2013.

The teams — which had to be led by a Canadian citizen — consist of architects, artists and other design professionals from around the globe. Some notable architecture team members include David Adjaye, Daniel Libeskind, Gilles Saucier of Saucier+Perrotte, and Jeffrey Craft of SWA Group.

The competition jury features internationally acclaimed art and design professionals, a representative from the National Holocaust Monument Development Council, and a Holocaust survivor.

Listed below are the six finalists.

Finalist teams:

  • Hossein Amanat (architect and urban designer)
    Esther Shalev-Gerz (artist)
    Daniel Roehr (landscape architect)

Dr. Debórah Dwork and Jeffrey Koerber (Holocaust scholars)
    – Toronto, Ontario

  • Gail Lord (museum planner)

For the next few months, the finalists will develop their designs before presenting them to the jury in winter 2014. The designs will be displayed in an exhibition as an opportunity for public feedback. Feedback will then be compiled and shared with the jury before they make their final selection.
