Danish practices ADEPT and LiWplanning just received The Danish Landscape Award for the project ”Måløv Axis” in Ballerup, Denmark, developed in collaboration with Imitio and Søren Jensen Engineering. The project will be inaugurated October 1st.
The purpose of the award is to bring landscape architecture in both urban and rural areas into focus. In addition, the award is an opportunity to honor individuals who with their extraordinary landscape architectural work contribute to the development of the profession.
The Måløv Axis connects the new district Søndergård with the old part of the suburb Måløv across two large traffic barriers, Frederikssundsvej and the S-train line. The project is a safety-related, functional and aesthetic improvement of the intersections. Måløv Axis is to be an attractive urban space for everyone, especially for the citizens of Måløv. The project will serve as an example of how to solve a problem, known in many cities, where the city’s traffic and development result in areas being cut off from each other.
With terrain as a theme this year the award called for projects which specifically show capability of interpreting the landscape context and subsequently shaping the terrain. Projects which unite pragmatic solutions with significant architecture.
The jury points out: ’’The Måløv Axis creates a distinguished connection across trafficked intersections in a completely impossible area. The project deals with the slope at the viaduct, which is a typical residual area resulting from a hybridization of technical facilities. Residual areas are usually overgrown with plants that will keep people away from the steep ground. Oftentimes, a disheartened result. This project enables the area to become a place for recreational activities and hangout spots. A dramatic and unique space that will attract attention and inspire its users. The project is particularly rewarded for: making gravity’s drawing of the landscape visible, examining the steepness of Denmark’s otherwise very flat landscape and turning an impossible place into a possible place.”
Inauguration: On Friday October 1st – the Day of Architecture – Ballerup Municipality in cooperation with Realdania inaugurates the first stage of the project, which is the result of a competition held in 2008. ADEPT and LiWplanning’s project ’Meltwater Valley’ is based on the glacial landscape around Måløv. As main idea the Måløv axis is interpreted as a meltwater valley running through the ice. This idea is directly translated into architecture by designing the pavement as a simulation of glacial deposits and the two pedestrian tunnels as luminous ‘ice cubes’.
By the Måløv Station a huge leap of a stair and ramp construction encourages recreational and social activities. Finally, ‘The Tavern Site’, formerly an overgrown hillside, is transformed into a steep and contemporary urban space.
ADEPT’s partner Martin Krogh says: ”We are obviously very honoured. Together with LiWplanning we have developed a project, which we think is right for the place and inhabitants of Måløv. We consider the award a motivating recognition of our work and our approach to architecture”.
The basis for the competition was a concept development phase in which the involvement of the local inhabitants was pivotal for the project. Ballerup Municipality held a series of workshops and interviews with various local groups in Måløv. The result was a report containing the collection of their wishes and demands for the future Måløv Axis.
”I am very pleased about the Måløv axis,” says Mayor Ove E. Dalsgaard, Ballerup. ”Not only because it has become an exceptionally beautiful urban space, but also because the whole process has been very successful. Young as well as old people in Måløv have contributed to the qualities of the cityscape, which we see today. It’s a particular pleasure to see that many young people have already taken the Måløv axis into use for practising parkour, table tennis, etc. For me it is a sign of having achieved what the public wanted, namely an urban space which provides the framework for urban life and experiences.”
Everyone is welcome to attend the inauguration taking place on Architecture Day, Friday 1st October 2010, 4pm, at Stationsvej by Måløv Station.
