The non-profit Vilcek Foundation recently announced the winners of the 2018 Vilcek Prizes in the Arts and Humanities, which honored practitioners in the architecture discipline for this year. In line with the foundation's mission, the awards distinguish immigrant practitioners for their significant contributions to the arts and sciences in the U.S.
The 2018 Vilcek Prize went to Guatemalan-born architectural designer and urban researcher Teddy Cruz, of the practice Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman. Cruz received the $100,000 grand prize in recognition of his body of work and for the firm's notable projects at the Tijuana/San Diego border that highlight border communities as sites to rethink urban policy, public space, and affordable housing.
The foundation also awarded three Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise, which are awarded to younger immigrant recipients “who have demonstrated exceptional promise early in their careers”. Each winner will receive $50,000.
The winners are:
Mona Ghandi, an assistant professor of architecture at Washington State University who works in the emerging field of computational data
Los Angeles-based independent architect James Leng, who has previously worked at OMA, UNStudio, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Michael Maltzan Architecture
Architect Jing Liu of Brooklyn-based SO–IL, known for their work in the arts and their innovative approaches to housing.
The winners will be honored at an awards gala in New York City this April.
