beintween* is pleased to announce a local design/build competition that is looking for the best chicken coop in Milwaukee. The coopetition, in collaboration with Cream City Hens, invites city dwellers to construct a full scale chicken coop. Building a coop yields 284 eggs per chicken per year, sustenance to any team's cooperative efforts. The idea hatched to take advantage of Milwaukee's new ordinance permitting residents to keep up to four chickens.
This competition is not solely about design, its about making. Salvaged materials greatly enhance demand a new sense of creativity. The challenge of constructing a coop from these is ecological by nature, diverting materials from the waste stream and repurposing them to produce usable energy in the form of animal protein.
The coopetition is intented to support locavores, promote material reuse, and challenge both designers and builders with a pragmatic + collaborative opportunity. It is open to the community and students alike.
There will be cash prizes to the top three coops. Honorable mentions will receive two chicks. The fee to participate is $50 for student teams; $100 otherwise. Coops built entirely of salvaged materials will be reimbursed fees in full upon submission. The deadline for the coopetition is March 1st, 2012. Two supplemental 11x17 boards are required. To register for this coopetition, visit beintween.org. RSVP under events to submit your coop. Registration will be complete upon receipt of the fee.
