Empowerment by Design Competition: Early Childhood Development Centers for Rwanda

African countries are facing an enormous challenge in the child development sphere: With over 140 million children scattered across Africa, the future of the continent is at stake. Several research projects have found that integrated and well-coordinated Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs help countries maximize the effectiveness of their investments in children. This international design competition is open to current students and graduates of the 2012 and 2013 academic years. Registration deadline is 23rd June & submission deadline is 7th July 2013.  Awards will be given for the top prize and four additional honorable mentions.

Modelling a Rwandan ECD Center infrastructure aims to understand and adapt to the specific community and develop an appropriate model. The aim of the project is to design a new facility that protects and stimulates Rwandan children while also engaging the context. The aim of this competition is to design a prototype center to welcome 50 children from ages 3 to 5 years, for stimulation, education and nutrition, and other parental and community activities out of the strict Early Childhood Development activities schedule. The center will comprise, but not limited to the following: - Stimulation rooms - Kitchen and administration areas - Playgrounds - Kitchen gardens - Toilets and WASH facilities Activities to be developed: - Children’s stimulation and health care - Parental education - Community meeting - Management of the center
