The Back-of-the-Envelope Bush Library Design Contest

Register/Submit Deadline:  Saturday, Feb 2, 20087:55 AMEDT

George W. Bush might not have been much of a book reader when he was at Yale University, but like any modern president, he will have a presidential library, likely at Southern Methodist University.

Robert A.M. Stern, celebrity architect and dean of the Yale School of Architecture, has been picked to design it. But we are certain that Chronicle readers have their own ideas of what the George W. Bush Presidential Library should look like.

We’re asking for your back-of-the-envelope designs, as if you’d sat down next to the president and sketched out your idea on a scrap piece of White House stationery.

We want designs that are serious, humorous, adventurous, or all of the above. You could win a sleek iPod Touch.

Here’s how this will work:

  1. Chronicle readers—be they professional architects and designers, or merely people who read too many design magazines—will sketch out their versions of the George W. Bush Presidential Library. These are back-of-the-envelope designs, and therefore should be on the back of a size-10 envelope. You can write explanatory descriptions of various aspects of your library design—just be sure to write clearly.
  2. Write your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address on the other side of the envelope.
  3. Put that envelope into another envelope and send it to The Chronicle at the address below by February 1, 2008.
  4. We’ll scan the designs and post them online for all to see. (We reserve the right to winnow the pool of contestants.)
  5. Readers will vote on their favorite design.
  6. The winning designer will win a brand new iPod Touch. It’s not a commission to design a presidential library, but it could be a close second.
