Tomorrow's Lifestyle Home

Register/Submit Deadline:  Saturday, Apr 12, 20086:55 AMEDT

The Mail on Sunday British Homes Awards 2008 sponsored by VELUX and in partnership with the National Centre for Excellence in Housing, British Interior Design Association (BIDA) THINK08 and Crest Nicholson, invite submissions for a single stage open design competition from an architectural practice for the most innovative exterior and interior design of a home that addresses future lifestyle requirements, whilst at the same time demonstrating attention to environmental and resource issues.

This competition is based upon an internal design brief developed by Crest Nicholson PLC which is presented at www.crestnicholson.com/homeforlife as a benchmark template to influence and inspire the entrants design vision. The winning scheme will be built by the company at an appropriate site England. The competition is being organised by The British Homes Awards, who have taken advice from the RIBA Competitions Office. All enquiries should be made to the promoter through www.britishhomesawards.com and not to the RIBA Competitions Office.

The development industry has over the last 5 years produced ever increasing volumes of apartments at the expense of medium/high density housing. If we are to create truly sustainable environments, developers and architects must be encouraged to design mixed communities where families, couples and singles can live in harmony. You are invited to design a home which has the capability to be altered and extended to meet the occupantsÂ’ changing lifestyle needs, without the need to extend the plot size.

This competition will challenge the UK’s architects, urban and interior designers to rethink not only the construction and design sites alongside that of the individual homes, but also that of the internal space requirements.

It is the intention of Crest Nicholson to build the winning design at an appropriate site within England - initially as a stand alone unit and possibly in multiples thereafter. The house may also be inhabited for a certain timeframe with the behavioural patterns and practice of its occupants evaluated for research initiatives.
