Sustainable Cities Award

The FT ULI Sustainable Cities Awards recognize outstanding and innovative programs that advance the application of sustainability principles to land use and thereby promote their incorporation in cities and in the general real estate industry. Award-winning programs will have global relevance, will add strategic value to companies and communities, and will enhance the environment. Programs submitted for consideration must be implemented and showing results, or they must be provoking significant new ideas and perspectives.

Up to seven winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony and dinner at the conclusion of the FT ULI Sustainable Cities conference at the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, London, UK, on June 16, 2008.

Eligibility

• Entries may originate anywhere in the world.
• They may be the work or inspiration of individuals (non-posthumous), organizations, governments and their agencies, and companies.
• Membership in ULI is not a requirement.
• Only programs—related to real estate and sustainability—are eligible.
• If the purpose of the program was to initiate a project, the program—not the project—will be the focus of your entry.
• The following describe the types of strategic real estate programs that this award will recognize:
  • Corporate real estate
  • Real estate company
  • Public agency initiatives
  • Non-governmental organization (NGO) programs
  • Technological advances in practice and design
  • Educational, certification, and research programs
  • Investment firm/fund programs

Criteria

The jury will apply the following criteria in choosing winners:

1. Innovative practices in sustainable development that establish new models. Entries should be state of the art in all aspects of their concept and implementation.
2. Implementation must be in place. Programs entered need not be completed, but must be more than pilot programs.
3. Documentable evidence that program goals are being achieved. Entries must be able to show that goals are being met according to schedule. Use the milestones and metrics that are standard in your industry, and if a financial result was one of the programmatic goals, some measure of financial success must be demonstrable.
4. Lessons learned that have broad applicability. Entries must demonstrate global responsibility by sharing lessons they have learned that can help inform future endeavors by others.
5. Contribute to reducing climate change. One of the goals or a result of your program must be the minimization of factors that contribute to climate change.
6. Demonstrate excellence when compared to similar program types. Each winner will be among the best examples of its type.

Jury

The jury comprises seven internationally-recognized experts in the sustainability and environmental fields.

Application Process and Schedule

Deadline for entry: April 11, 2008 postmark.

The jury meets in mid-April to choose up to twenty finalists.

Finalists will be invited to present to the jury in person or via electronic conference on a set date in mid-May.

Up to seven winners will be announced during an awards ceremony and dinner, culminating the FT ULI Sustainability conference on June 16, 2008.

Application Fee

If the primary sponsor or client is a public-sector or non-profit organization, the application fee is US$250/€175/£125.

For all others, including individuals, the application fee is US$500/€350/£250.
