The Toronto Biennial of Art (the Biennial/TBA) will present its second edition of the city-wide event from March 26 to June 5, 2022. Tairone Bastien, Candice Hopkins, and Katie Lawson are the curatorial team for the free, 72-day event, with contributions from former TBA curators Clare Butcher and Myung-Sun Kim. The event will include 23 new commissions at nine venues across Toronto and its partner regions.

Titled, What Water Knows, The Land Remembers, this edition builds on the inaugural iteration in 2019, which was called The Shoreline Dilemma, and was organized by the same curatorial team. A selection of artists from the first edition were invited back for the second. Among the artists featured in 2022 are Judy Chicago, Jeffrey Gibson, Nadia Belerique, Brian Jungen, and Syrus Marcus Ware.

In total, the Biennial will bring together 37 local and international artists, hailing from over 18 places of origin including Argentina, Canada, England, France, Germany, Indonesia, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Lithuania, Norway, Pakistan, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, and Zimbabwe, as well as Indigenous communities in Canada, Colombia, Aotearoa | New Zealand, Norway, and the United States. Grounded in diverse local contexts, the Biennial’s city-wide programming aims to inspire individuals, engage communities, and contribute to global conversations.
