Los Angeles cultural institutions are ringing the changes — and tapping design talent from around the world. How do architects make the cut for these career and culture-defining projects? In a time of global city-building, is there a value in a contemporary regionalism? Hear from museum directors, architects, design journalists, teachers, and others in conversation at A+D Museum on Saturday, November 16 from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM.
Hear about philanthropy and procurement; cultural, political and community leadership; and the role of local architecture schools and media in the creation of our museums and civic landmarks. Speakers to include President and Director of The Natural History Museum, Dr. Lori Bettison Varga and Christopher Hawthorne the Chief Design Officer for the City of LA.

Frances Anderton, Host, KCRW’s “DnA: Design and Architecture”
10:00am: The View from Inside City Hall
Christopher Hawthorne, LA’s Chief Design Officer, will talk about California regionalism as well as procurement at the City of Los Angeles.
10:30am: How the Natural History Museums selects its designers
Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, director of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County, will talk about the selection process and architectural goals for the institution’s new buildings at its La Brea and Exposition Park sites. She will be joined by architect Fred Fisher.
11:30am: Beyond the Ivory Tower: Education and the Cultural Realm
Anthony Morey will moderate a conversation about the role of schools and design institutions (including museums) in cultivating architectural talent and advancing architectural expression.
Guests: Hernan Diaz Alonso, head of SCI-Arc; Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, Dean of the School of Architecture at Woodbury University; Stephen Phillips, Director, Los Angeles Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design.

1:30pm: Future Forward for Museums and their Architectures
Rebecca Fitzgerald, architectural designer and faculty member at SCI-Arc will talk about the future of cultural buildings and museums and how changing demands — programmatic, technological, philanthropic and in terms of stakeholders — will impact the design of buildings.

2:30PM Figuring it out: Elizabeth Timme and David Pakshong
Frances will talk with two architects about how they are mapping a path in Los Angeles:
LA-Más co-principal Elizabeth Timme explains how she has learned to work with the city while developing an architectural language specific to Los Angeles. David Pakshong, Civic & Culture Leader, Senior Associate at Gensler will talk about his experience as project leader on the Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Broad and the Academy Museum.
3:15pm: Media free for all
Archinect’s Antonio Pacheco will talk about design journalists’ role in educating the public about design talent and regional architectural issues.
