Mapping Materials

Central to any collection is the categorization and dissemination of data comprised within its contents. As the University of Virginia School of Architecture embarks on building its own materials collection, these two concepts – categorization and dissemination – become crucial in the collection’s development. To lay the groundwork for the UVA Materials Collection, we are proposing a public forum for this endeavor in the form of a public exhibit. The collection in not a neutral entity; however, it does have the responsibility to serve multiple users and facilitate their own approaches to incorporating materials information into design practice and research. The public exhibit will serve as a venue through which to build and assess the collection’s objectives, as well as to gauge the architecture school and public’s means of applying materials in the constructed environment. www.arch.virginia.edu/events/mapping-materials
