NEARLY TRAPPED: DESIGN IN THE AGE OF CLIMATE CONSEQUENCES Dr. David W. Orr Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics Oberlin College TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2009 6:30 pm The Great Hall Cooper Union Foundation Building East 7th Street at Third Avenue New York City The Institute for Sustainable Design at The Cooper Union was created in 2008, with support from philanthropist Jack Rudin, as a resource for education, research and public understanding of the principles and methods of sustainability in all design disciplines. Central to the mission of the Institute is the development of innovative pedagogies in architecture, art and engineering that will be models for the transformation of learning and practice for a sustainable future. David W. Orr is the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics in the Environmental Studies Program at Oberlin College. He is also a James Marsh Professor at large at the University of Vermont. He holds a B.A. from Westminster College, an M.A. from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of five books and has published over 150 articles in scientific journals, social science publications, and popular magazines. The recipient of numerous awards, he is best known for his pioneering work on environmental literacy in higher education and his recent work in ecological design. "I believe that educators must become students of the ecologically proficient mind and of the things that must be done to foster such minds. In time this will mean nothing less than the redesign of education itself." - Dr. Orr Free and open to the public The Great Hall of The Cooper Union, New York, NY
