Winners have been announced for the 2009/2010 Leading Edge Student Design Competition. The annual contest seeks to support and enhance the study of sustainable and energy-efficient building practices in architectural education.
This year, the competition focused on the coastal city of Long Beach, California. Students entering Challenge 1 (3rd-5th year undergraduate and graduate students), designed a zero-net energy Workforce Training Center; students entering Challenge 2 (students in their first two years of study), designed a zero-net energy Student Residence. The projects are located on adjacent sites on Long Beach Boulevard.
The panel of judges comprised Sylvia Darr, Challenge Architect; Gregg Ander, Design Judge; Vivian Loftness, Design Judge; Nancy Clanton, Design Judge; Randall Higa, Technical Judge.
The judges praised that the winning designs went beyond functional success to create environmental delight and a sense of community for residents and students, as well as the students' celebration of the benign climate of Long Beach and the opportunity for indoor-outdoor living and learning.
Two tied Second Prizes were given in Challenge 2 instead of naming one First Prize winner.
