First exhibited at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein last year, "Architecture of Independence: African Modernism" is heading over to the Graham Foundation in Chicago this Friday, January 29. Curated by architect Manuel Herz, the exhibition focuses on the complex process of nation building in five African countries who fought for independence from their colonizers during the 1960s and '70s.

Based on the book of the same name, "Architecture of Independence" spotlights almost 80 modernist structures built in Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Zambia, and Kenya. Iwan Baan and Alexia Webster snapped exclusive photos of the buildings in their current states.
Opening night will feature a talk from Manuel Herz, and a program of public events are scheduled throughout the duration of the exhibition. Guests include filmmaker Frances Bodomo with film scholar Jacqueline Stewart; architectural historian Nnamdi Elleh; architect and novelist Lesley Lokko; architectural historian Ola Uduku, and designer and scholar Mabel O. Wilson with architect Peter Tolkin.
You can also learn more about the accompanying "Architecture of Independence" book from Manuel Herz on our sister site Archinect.
