As political upheaval continues in Kiev, Ukraine, the Kyiv FORUM by Erik Herrmann and Ashley Bigham is a timely project. The proposal was recently selected to be exhibited at the annual CANactions Festival, the largest architectural event in Ukraine.
The FORUM public sculpture is adaptive to the city's changing identity and "user generated" in that anyone who encounters the space can hold public meetings, discussions, and other democratic events. The proposal emphasizes the value of such spaces, which would otherwise be taken for granted on an everyday basis.
Check it out below.
"The Kyiv FORUM is a user-generated space where citizens create their own place for meeting, sharing, and creating. The building provides the framework and structure for the events of democracy. It’s lattice wood construction is both economical and functional. Users can adapt the space by constructing temporary walls, tents, etc. Kyiv FORUM is a 'messy utopia' where the ideal egg form and rigid geometric structure provide a framework to be maintained or denied by the individual. It is not prohibited to modify the original design, in fact it is encouraged."
"Ukraine is entering a new phase of ownership in government. However, looking at Ukraine’s history it is clear that this is only one of many such transitions. Each year people come together to add another layer to the structure. The Kyiv FORUM is already looking toward the next revolution. This project is one of cautious optimism. The goal is to provide Ukrainians with the public space they have earned through their painstaking and heroic efforts on Maidan square."
"Inspired by the make-shift structures of the EuroMaidan movement, the Kyiv FORUM allows participants to create the space needed at any given time. Users are encouraged to use the lattice framework as the structure for additional materials. Citizens can combine found objects, traditional textile fabrics, or mass customized parts together as walls and ceilings. From planting flowers in spring to lighting candles in January The Kyiv FORUM provides space for mourning, celebration, democracy, and education."
