Gehry Partners and Foster + Partners were chosen to design Phase 3 of the Battersea Power Station in London as announced on Oct. 23. Both firms will collaborate to build the two residential development zones on the east and west sides of the Battersea Power Stations development, also known as the High Street -- a retail pedestrian pathway that leads directly to the new development. This will be Frank Gehry's first building in London.
To add to the grand scale of this mixed-use project, it will include: 1,200 residential units; a 200-room hotel; 350,000 sq. ft of retail and restaurant space; recreational areas; and a 15,000 sq.ft library.
The ground-breaking ceremony took place in July 2013, with the Prime Minister of the UK, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and the Mayor of London in attendance.
Further details and images of this development are below.
From the Battersea Power Station press statement:
"Phase 3 will be one of the most exciting areas of the Battersea Power Station development, otherwise known as the High Street. Being a retail pedestrian street it is the gateway to the entire development and the new Northern Line extension. Phase 3 will comprise two residential development zones located either side of the High Street. Both architectural practices are collaborating on the High Street; Gehry Partners is designing the residential buildings to the east of the High Street, with Foster + Partners designing the residential buildings to the west..."
"Frank Gehry, founder of Gehry Partners commented;
'Gehry Partners is honored to have this wonderful opportunity to collaborate with our respected colleagues Foster + Partners on this seriously important project for the city of London. Our goal is to help create a neighborhood and a place for people to live that respects the iconic Battersea Power Station while connecting it into the broader fabric of the city. We hope to create a design that is uniquely London, that respects and celebrates the historical vernacular of the city.'
Grant Brooker, Design Director, Foster + Partners commented;
'We moved our own office to Wandsworth almost twenty five years ago – the Borough is very important to us, so we were absolutely delighted to be chosen to be part of this inspiring regeneration project for the Battersea Power Station redevelopment. It has a vision which will transform this area and create a vibrant new district for South London that we can all be proud of. Along with our colleagues at Gehry Partners, we are joining a great team of designers and we will work closely with them to create a new high street and our part of this exciting new community.'
Rob Tincknell, Chief Executive Officer for Battersea Power Station Development Company commented:
'We are thrilled to have two such well regarded architectural practices join the team and for Battersea Power Station to be the home to Gehry’s first building in London. This clearly demonstrates both the quality and the design aspirations which our shareholders are determined to achieve, as well as the extraordinary design solutions which the site deserves. We are very confident that Phase 3 will be something groundbreaking and wonderful in London.'"
"The mixed-use Battersea Power Station master plan is designed by Rafael Viñoly. It spans 39 acres of prime River Thames frontage and comprises over 3,400 new homes as well as offices, shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, community and leisure space and 18 acres of open space. Specialist restoration architects Wilkinson Eyre is appointed to the Power Station building and Ian Simpson Architects alongside dRMM has designed Circus West, Phase 1 of the development."
Stay tuned for future updates.
