The Art Directors Club Exhibits Student Visions on Infrastructure

By Bustler Editors|

Friday, Apr 10, 2009

President Obama’s stimulus package has the country thinking “infrastructure” with a focus on urban environments and mass transit. Although these projects are not shovel ready, some students graduating from New York’s School of Visual Arts have designed transportation centers that enhance travel coast to coast. They include:

  • Bringing a luxurious in-flight first-class cabin experience to an entire airport terminal
  • Transforming the Battery-Maritime Building into an active ferry terminal and entertainment multi-plex
  • Creating a sustainable NJ Transit Rail Station that brings community back to commuting.

An exhibition at the Art Directors Club features thesis projects by graduating seniors from the BFA Interior Design Department at SVA. The program prepares students to create environments with “wow” factor that also aim to change the world. Taught by award-winning designers, architects and artists, students learn to integrate the latest technology and materials with time-tested processes and principles of design. The faculty and curriculum are guided by a commitment to sustainability, the interplay between art and design, and the responsibility of design to address social issues.

The exhibition is curated by Neville Lewis (National Arts Club Gold Medal and Interior Design Hall of Fame) and Anthony Lee, design director, Gary Lee Partners. The projects will be on view from April 20 through 24 at the Art Directors Club, 106 West 29 Street, New York City. Reception will be on Tuesday, April 21, 5:30 - 7pm.
