Zoom, zoom! Riding a Vespa scooter has long been a common means of transportation in Rome. However, figuring out designated parking for the vehicle isn't anything new either. To address this issue, ARCHmedium hosted the Rome Motorino Check Point (RMCP) competition.
In the competition prompt, the Roman city council created "Motorino Check Points" -- or a network of motorized scooter parking areas spread throughout the city. Undergrad and graduate students worldwide were invited to send their proposals for a parking garage called the Motorino Check Point of Termini central station, while following required building and site specifications.
Out of 185 student submissions and 73 young graduate entries, the jury awarded three student prizes and 10 Honorable Mentions.
One entry won first prize in the Young Architects (Graduates) competition, while another Graduate entry received Honorable Mention.
Check 'em out below.
FIRST PRIZE
TEAM: FG
COUNTRY: SPAIN
SCHOOL: UNIVERSITY OF ZARAGOZA
MEMBERS: JAVIER GAVÍN BALDA, LAURA FLORENTÍN ARAGÓN
"The proposal acquires an appropriate scale within the site. The project is set as a coherent new element in the square of Termini Station. The competition program is organized underneath several platforms placed at different heights. They draw a variable section that fits the program within the environment. The building is configured as a big “pergola” where its lightness allows high permeability and long visual axes."
SECOND PRIZE
TEAM: RAUP
COUNTRY: CROACIA
SCHOOL: UNIVERSITY OF ZAGREB - FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE
MEMBERS: FILIP ROMIC, KRESIMIR ROMIC
"A mechanical device is placed in the plot and inhabits the square. An infrastructure that solves the program forcefully and makes it the main character. The repetition of a pattern creates a strong system through which all main decisions are taken. A mat building that generates shadows on the ground floor and a new landscape in the roof. The jury aslo appreciated the sense of measure and dimension behind the grid of the system."
THIRD PRIZE
TEAM: WYA
COUNTRY: GERMANY
SCHOOL: KIT KARLSRUHE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
MEMBERS: JERÓNIMO HAUG, LENNART SCHÜTZ
"Conceptual approach to the competition. An elegant and powerful landmark is placed in the square. A radical bet in favor of technology that solves the distribution of the program. At a city level the project is repeatable all over the city setting several parking spots connected to the public transport. Formally well resolved and consistent panel."
HONORABLE MENTIONS
TEAM: S.P.Q.R.
COUNTRY: SPAIN
SCHOOL: UPC. ETSAB
MEMBERS: JESÚS QUINTANA GÓMEZ JULIO PICATOSTE VAZQUEZ ANTONIO REBOREDO RAPOSO
"Little impact piece of architecture, almost virtually nonexistent. Minimal intervention that fits the pre-existing elements. Preserves the vegetation and adds a skin that creates a microclimate to inhabit the site with the program. The proposal rearranges the space, maximizing the pedestrian flows underneath. The action is reversible and therefore de-constructible."
TEAM: NO THANKS
COUNTRY: ITALY
SCHOOL: TU DELFT
MEMBERS: SEBASTIAN COSTA ANTONIO D’ AQUILIO LUCA DE STEFANO
"The project rethinks the program and generates a social approach to competition. Clear manifesto on the shortcomings of the use of bikes and bicycle in Rome, as well as on the use of public funds. The project proposes to use the hypothetical budget for the construction of Rome Motorino Check Point to improve and promote public transportation."
TEAM: KRKDL
COUNTRY: ITALY
SCHOOL: UNIVERSITY OF FLORENCE
MEMBERS: MICHELE DOSTUNI MATTEO ZITA
"Plastic and suggestive picture. A subtle line profile defines the building and organizes the program. In the roof top of the large slab, the project creates a space where you can park motorcycles and also interact with the square from an elevated position."
TEAM: EM
COUNTRY: FRANCE
SCHOOL: ENSAP- BORDEAUX
MEMBERS: JEREMY REY
"The project aims to repeat a linear-container-piece that clearly organize the parking for motorbikes. In addition it solves the social program that activates the public space that the containers generate for itself. A flat roof generates different situations and the existing vegetation makes the building and the park one same thing."
TEAM: ACC
COUNTRY: SPAIN
SCHOOL: EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY OF MADRID
MEMBERS: ÁLVARO CEREZO
"Proper placement of the piece on the site. The project pursues the idea of serialization, opting for prefabrication and industrialization. The system also allows the deconstruction and reversibility of the elements. Good development of the strategy that fits in many places. The project develops the concept of mobility associated with the proposed program of the competition."
TEAM: ATELIER MXT
COUNTRY: FRANCE
SCHOOL: ENSA NORMANDIE / ENSA PARIS MALAQUAIS
MEMBERS: MAXIME MELOCCO XAVIER DELANOUE TIPHAINE JAXEL

Well integrated with the environment and proper integration with the elements of the square. Correct reorganization of the traffic pedestrian flows in the area."
TEAM: ARAMIS VINCENZI
COUNTRY: ITALIA
SCHOOL: ACCADEMIA DI ARCHITETTURA DI MENDRISIO
