Compact Live-Work House (Portland, USA) — Architecture Competition

Registration Deadline:  Monday, Aug 10, 202611:59 PMBST

Submission Deadline:  Tuesday, Aug 25, 202611:59 PMBST

Compact Live-Work House (Portland, USA) — Architecture Competition

The Compact Live-Work House architecture competition invites designers, architects, students, and creative thinkers to explore the future of small-scale living and working environments. Set within the progressive and design-conscious context of Portland, Oregon, this competition challenges participants to create a compact dwelling that seamlessly integrates everyday residential life with productive work activities.

As remote work, digital entrepreneurship, creative practices, and flexible lifestyles continue to reshape the way people live, the traditional separation between home and workplace is rapidly disappearing. Today's homes are increasingly expected to function as offices, studios, workshops, classrooms, and creative spaces. This shift presents new architectural opportunities to rethink how limited space can support multiple functions without compromising comfort, wellbeing, or productivity.

Participants are tasked with designing a highly efficient live-work house that accommodates both domestic and professional needs within a compact footprint. The proposal should provide spaces for living, sleeping, cooking, relaxing, and working while maintaining a strong sense of spatial quality and user experience. Whether designed for a remote professional, artist, designer, maker, writer, consultant, or entrepreneur, the house should demonstrate how thoughtful architecture can enhance daily life and support evolving work patterns.

The competition encourages innovative approaches to flexibility, multifunctional design, and sustainable living. Participants may explore transformable interiors, integrated furniture systems, adaptable layouts, passive environmental strategies, and creative solutions that maximize functionality while minimizing spatial requirements. Special attention should be given to natural light, ventilation, privacy, acoustics, and the relationship between focused work and comfortable living.

The site is a hypothetical urban or suburban lot in Portland, allowing participants the freedom to develop a context that best supports their concept. Designs should respond to local climate conditions, solar orientation, neighborhood character, and opportunities for sustainable design. The proposal should demonstrate environmental responsibility while remaining realistic, buildable, and economically feasible.

Projects will be evaluated on the strength of their architectural vision, quality of live-work integration, spatial efficiency, sustainability, user experience, and overall presentation. The jury will particularly value solutions that transform the challenges of compact living into opportunities for innovation and creativity.

Participants must design within a construction budget of $150,000 USD, including materials, labor, and installation costs. Practicality and feasibility should be balanced with design ambition.
