Overview
SPACE is seeking artists, architects and/or designers to activate the façade of the building in a way that relates to the mission of SPACE and the activities therein.
In this open call phase, we are seeking qualifications (see list of requirements below). A jury will select the finalists, who will then be invited to participate in the concept development phase. These finalists will be provided a stipend for their submitted concept.
Project Goal
Reimagine the exterior of the building to make SPACE’s presence unmistakable. The successful design will:
- Exhibit the mission of this distinctive organization
- Generate a connection from the outside to the interior - make the energy on the inside externally visible
- Communicate the fact that SPACE is accessible and open and welcoming
- Invite people to come in and discover SPACE for themselves
- Clearly define various parts of SPACE and their corresponding entrances
Context
The SPACE Gallery building is located in the historic downtown arts district of Portland, at 532-538 Congress Street. A neighbor to arts and educational organizations, retail and commercial establishments, SPACE also sits within the most densely populated and ethnically and income diverse residential area in the city.
Through the generosity of the community, in 2015 SPACE Gallery purchased its building at 532-538 Congress Street, which proudly houses to SPACE Gallery, Annex, Pickwick Press and SPACE Studios.

- Facilitate lectures and discussions
- Rent studios to artists with active practices
- Oversee a statewide arts regranting program
- Foster conversations about issues of social justice
- Engage the public in community events and open forums
- Collaborate with other nonprofits and performing arts organizations
Building History
The SPACE Studios building, also known as the Durant Block, is believed to have been built just before the turn of the century as a hotel for travelling salesmen. Since then, it has housed makers and purveyors of various kinds- including, at one point, a Wendy’s restaurant. In 1998, architect Christopher Campbell purchased the building and for the next 17 years offered affordable studio space for artists, serving the emerging Portland arts community. As the housing market evolved in Portland and many of the surrounding buildings were renovated into condos, 538 Congress remained artists’ studios, true to the mission and intent of the former and current owners. SPACE Gallery was founded by Todd Bernard and Jon Courtney, occupying the bottom floor in 2002 and expanding into the Annex in 2011. In 2015, SPACE gallery purchased the studio building and Annex where it remains today.
Budget
The current allocation for this effort is roughly $18,000. This includes designer compensation as well any materials or structural needs. Should the idea merit a larger budget, additional funds could be raised.
Selection Process
A jury composed of board members, staff of SPACE Gallery and community members who possess expertise in the arts and design will review the submissions. A group of finalists will be selected from the initial submissions. These finalist will be invited to an information session where they will receive the scope of the project, requirements and other details. Finalists will be invited to submit a full concept for the facade including drawings, models (digital or actual) and a narrative description. They will present their final and full concept to the selection committee in person.
There will be a $500 stipend paid to each finalists for each presentation.
