Across Europe a new generation of practices are transforming social housing. Responding to continued high demand, changing clients and new funding methods, architects are once again addressing how homes are delivered at scale with a new focus on city making. From mixing uses, sharing spaces and blending tenures, home preferences, living habits and architectural traditions differ from country to country. However, uniting them all is a renewed focus on embracing new methods and innovative refurbishment strategies to achieve new high standards of exemplary housing design.
In this international debate, inspired by the new “Social Housing” publication, Architecture and Design critic at The Guardian, Oliver Wainwright, chairs a discussion with architects from across the continent exploring shifting national attitudes, recent experiences, housing traditions, and pan-European challenges.
Featuring: architect and co-author of Social Housing Paul Karakusevic (Karakusevic Carson Architects, UK), Christelle Avenier (Avenier Cornejo Architectes, France), Hans van der Heijden (The Netherlands), Frederic Druot (Frédéric Druot Architecture, France) and Sascha Zander (Zanderroth Architekten, Germany).
